Batu Cermin Cave (Mirror Stone Cave) - Where Sunlight Becomes a Mirror

Just 15 minutes from downtown Labuan Bajo lies a geological wonder: Batu Cermin Cave, or Mirror Stone Cave.

Spanning 19 hectares with a towering 75-meter-high ceiling, this cave gets its name from a unique natural phenomenon. Sunlight enters through cracks in the cave walls and reflects off the mineral-covered stones, creating a mirror-like effect that lights up the dark corners of the cave.

Inside, you'll be amazed by glittering stalactites and stalagmites that sparkle when hit by light, thanks to natural salt deposits. Look closer at the walls and you'll find ancient fossils of corals and sea turtles - proof that Flores Island was once under the sea.

History in Brief:
Discovered in 1951 by Dutch priest and archaeologist Theodore Verhoeven, the cave holds significant historical value. The marine fossils found inside support the theory that Flores was once at the bottom of the ocean.
