Sano Nggoang Lake is a stunning volcanic crater lake and one of the largest and deepest in the world, reaching depths of up to 500 meters. This is a large crater lake (size of 3.3 x 2.2 km) situated in the center of the Waesano Stratovolcano. It has a maximum depth of 500m, being the deepest volcanic lake in eastern Indonesia, and with depths of 600m is said to be the world's deepest volcanic crater lake.

What Makes It Unique?

1. Giant & Deep
Located approximately 35km to the east of Labuan Bajo in the heart of the Mbeliling mountain ranges, at 750 meters above sea level. Sano Nggoang Crater Lake is located 35km from Labuan Bajo, accessible by 2 to 3 hours of often-rough road. It's the biggest crater lake in Eastern Indonesia.

2. Hot Springs & Healing Waters
While swimming in the lake is not recommended due to its highly acidic pH and high sulfur content, visitors can still take a dip in the warm waters of the hot springs believed to have medicinal properties. The magmatism activity produces geothermal manifestations such as hot spring, rock alteration, and sulfur deposits, the hottest water temperature is 81°C. A pungent sulfur smell will be around the lake area. Bathing for skin health is one of the main objectives.

3. Wild Nature & Birds
The lake and an overall surrounding area of 5,500 hectares are proposed to become a protected area for the remaining forests and endemic bird species such as the native Flores crow and the Flores monarch. Despite the challenging road, travelers find the lake beautiful with signs of volcanic activity and friendly locals.

How to Visit:
A spectacular 3.5 hours drive from Labuan Bajo (62 km) brings you to Nunang Village, the entrance to Sano Nggoang Lake. Be prepared for strong sulfur smells and rough last kilometers, but worth it for stunning views.
