Unlike most beaches in Flores that are wide open to the sun, Wairhubing is uniquely blessed with a natural canopy. For almost two kilometers, the coastline is lined with tall coconut palms and broad-leafed ketapang trees. The result is a long, shady, cool beach where locals and travelers come specifically to unwind, have a picnic, and enjoy the sea breeze without the harsh sun.

It is a long beach with beautiful black volcanic sand, framed by coconut trees. On a lucky day, you can even spot large tanker ships passing by or anchored near the nearby Pertamina fuel terminal, creating a unique contrast between nature and daily life.

A Beach Cared For by The Community

What makes Wairhubing even more special is the people behind it. This is not just a beach, it is a community conservation project.

The Maumere Diving Community, led by local youth, organizes clean-up activities here almost every day. Fallen ketapang leaves and litter are cleared by volunteers who truly care about keeping their beach beautiful. When you visit, you are supporting a beach that is loved and protected by its own community. It is also home to local fishermen - recently, the village received 25 new fishing boats to help fishermen who previously had to cast nets from the shore.

Plan Your Visit

• Location: Desa Watuliwung, Kangae District, Sikka Regency. On the main road Nairoa Km 3, heading east from Maumere towards Paga.

• Distance: Only 10-15 km east of Maumere city center, about 20-30 minutes by motorbike or car.

• Entrance: There are several entrances, but look for the two main gates with signboards. Parking for cars and motorbikes is available. Small entrance fee applies.

• Facilities: Large parking lot, local food warungs, toilets, eco-cottages for overnight stays.

• Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon from 4:30 PM onwards for the famous sunset. Morning is best for a quiet swim.
