Nestled in Eastern Flores, Tenun Ikat Lepo Lorun is vibrant hub of traditional weaving that showcases intricate art of ikat. This remarkable process involves hand-dyeing and weaving fabrics, resulting in stunning textiles adorned with rich patterns and colors. During visit on July 26, 2025, I had privilege to learn from Alfonsa and her talented team of women who guided me through each meticulous stepβfrom transforming cotton plants into thread to crafting beautiful sarongs.
In weaving house called Lepo Lorun, in Nita Village, Sikka Regency, seven women still faithfully maintain tradition of weaving. Amidst onslaught of cheap factory-made fabrics and rapid flow of modernization, they persevere, preserving Sikka ikat weaving that has been passed down through generations. For women of Lepo Lorun, weaving is more than just job. Sikka ikat weaving is not just cloth, but living cultural archive.

Process:
Cotton: Growing, picking, transforming cotton plants into thread (hand-spinning)
Dyeing: Natural dyes - indigo, morinda roots (red), turmeric, etc - hand-dyeing with resist technique
Tying: Ikat means tie - tying threads to create patterns before dyeing (meticulous)
Weaving: Using traditional back-strap loom, weaving fabrics with rich patterns
Motifs: Each motif has meaning - ancestral stories, nature, social status, philosophy
