This remarkable cultural destination has preserved its heritage for over 1,200 years, featuring megalithic structures, stone altars, and traditional thatched-roof houses.

Bena Traditional Village, located in Ngada Regency, Bajawa, lies at the foot of the Inerie Volcano. This megalithic village is one of the most frequently visited cultural sites in the region, offering glimpse into traditional way of life of the Ngada people. Just a 30-minute drive from Bajawa town, Bena is renowned for its unique architecture, stone monuments, and sacred sites that reflect ancient customs and traditions.

What Makes It Special:

1. Iconic Village Layout with Mount Inerie Backdrop
Resting on Inerie's flank, Bena is one of the most traditional Ngada villages. Houses with high, thatched roofs line up in two rows on a ridge. They're interspersed with ancestral totems including megalithic tombs, Ngadhu (thatched parasol-like structures) and Bhaga (miniature thatched-roof houses).

How to Get There:

• From Bajawa: 19km south, 30-45 min drive - rental motorbike/car

• From Labuan Bajo: Bajawa can be reached in about 7-8 hours by road, then to Bena

• Entrance: Donation-based (around Rp 50k per person), plus need to buy local ikat as support

Best Time: 

Morning (8-10 AM) for soft light on Inerie, or late afternoon (4-5 PM) for golden hour. Combine with Inerie climb or other Ngada villages (Luba, Gurusina, Tololela).

Tips:  Dress respectfully (cover knees), ask permission before entering houses, buy ikat weaving directly from weavers to support community. Bring small cash for donations.
