Visit Wologai traditional village, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Wologai is one of few villages in Ende district with well-maintained houses built in traditional Lionese architectural style.

Just off road between Moni and Ende, you'll see Wologai, a reconstructed Lio village. Traditional layout is nice, probably best for photography, with tall thatched houses arranged around central courtyard.

What Makes It Special:

1. Authentic Lio Tribe Culture
Lio people profess to be descendants of one mother and one father from Mount Lepembusu, and Lio traditional house reflects this "one mother" narrative. "The mother has an esteemed position in our society," says Aloysius Leta, a Wologai village elder, as he shows me into his traditional house.

• Philosophy: Matrilineal influence - mother esteemed, house symbolizes mother

• Architecture: Sa'o Lio traditional houses with high thatched roofs, distinctive Lionese style, wooden structure

2. Well-Preserved & Photogenic
Wologai is one traditional village in Ende district. This traditional village also complete with some traditional houses which built in Lionese architectural style.

• Best preserved in Ende district (many other Lio villages modernized)

• Tall roofs almost 10-15 meters high - dramatic!

3. Living Culture & Ceremonies
During big harvest ceremony that usually takes place in August, Wologai people from abroad reunite in their home village and turn it into very lively spot.

• Daily life: Weaving, farming, traditional activities still practiced

• Ceremonies: Harvest ceremony in August is biggest - all Wologai diaspora return

• You can enter houses and talk to elders about Lio culture

• Less touristy than Bena - more authentic interaction

How to Get There:

• Location: Detusoko District, Ende Regency - off main road Moni-Ende, about 30-40 minutes from Ende city, 15 minutes from Moni (Kelimutu area)

• Transport: You can reach this village by car, scooter or bicycle - easy access from Trans-Flores highway, short drive up hill from main road

• Combine with: Blue Stone Beach (on way to Ende), Kelimutu Lakes (1 hour from Wologai), Bung Karno Exile House in Ende

• Entrance: Donation Rp 25k-50k per person, sarong may be required

• Guide: Village elder available to explain

• Best Time: Morning for soft light on thatched roofs, August for harvest ceremony (but crowded with returning locals). Dry season May-October best.

Tips: On journey toward Bajawa, we stopped for lunch at Blue Stone Beach, near town of Ende, in Penggajawa area, before settling for night in Bajawa, we visited Wologai Village, one of last remaining traditional villages in Flores. Perfect stop between Ende and Moni!

Respectful dress required, ask permission before entering houses, buy ikat weaving to support community.
