What do you expect when you reach top of mountain? Peace? Tranquility? Or beauty of lake? Yes, a lake. Not one or two, but three lakes at once. Each different color. That is sensation when we set foot at peak of Mount Kelimutu at altitude around 1,640 meters above sea level. To reach Kelimutu Three-colored Crater Lakes in Ende, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, we have to trek from parking area.

These are crater lakes of Mount Kelimutu on Indonesian island of Flores. Volcano rises 5,479 feet (1,639-1,640m) above sea level, and its three lakes, known locally as Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo, have been changing colors and mystifying visitors for many generations.

Kelimutu is small, but well-known, Indonesian compound volcano in central Flores Island with three summit crater lakes of varying colors. The western lake, Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is commonly blue. Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Tai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched, or Enchanted Lake), which share common crater wall, are commonly colored green and red, respectively, although lake colors periodically vary.

What Makes It Special:

1. Three Lakes, Three Colors, Three Meanings (Sacred)
Rising to about 1,639 metres on Flores Island, far east of Bali and Lombok, Kelimutu is situated within Kelimutu National Park. At top, three crater lakes occupy separate hollows, divided by narrow ridges of rock.

• Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People / Lake of Elders) - Western lake, commonly blue, sometimes white. Believed to be resting place for old souls, wise elders. Most sacred.

• Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) - Commonly colored green / turquoise. For young people who died. Two lakes share common crater wall.

• Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched / Enchanted Lake) - Commonly red, sometimes brown, dark green. For evil people / sinners. Also called Bewitched Lake.

Local Lio people believe lakes are resting places for departed souls - colors change when ancestors angry or at peace. Colors periodically vary due to volcanic minerals and chemical reactions!

2. Ever-Changing Colors - Natural Mystery
At summit of Mount Kelimutu, colour is not fixed idea. Lakes are situated within Kelimutu National Park, protected area recognised for its ecological and cultural importance. Each characterised by distinct colours as result of volcanic activity.

Kelimutu is famous for its three crater lakes that have different colors and meanings, and considered sacred by local people. Lakes also known for mysterious color changes, which are caused by natural and supernatural factors.

Colors changed over years: blue to white to turquoise, green to black, red to dark green. Last eruption 1968, after which signs of activity not observed, but minerals still active causing color changes.

• Trek: From parking area, trek to peak - easy paved steps, 20-30 minutes

• Entrance: IDR 150k foreigner for Kelimutu National Park, opens 4 AM for sunrise

• Guide: Not needed but local guide can explain legend

• Combine with: Wologai Traditional Village (on road Moni-Ende), Blue Stone Beach, Bung Karno House in Ende

Tips: Start at 4:00-4:30 AM from Moni to catch sunrise (5:30-6:00 AM). Bring warm clothes, headlamp, coffee. Colors best in dry season May-Oct. Stay in Moni night before (many homestays). Don't miss - this is highlight of all Flores!
