Ranamese Lake - Volcanic Jewel of Flores Highlands

Lake Ranamese or Ranamese is a volcanic lake located in Golo Loni Village, Ranamese Subdistrict, East Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

What Makes It Special:

1. Biodiversity Hotspot - Flora & Fauna Paradise
The area around Ranamese is rich in endemic flora and fauna. Giant trees like Giro (Sauravia ver heyeni), Labe (Ficus fistulosa), Natu (Palagium) and Lui (Frasimus griffithi) serve as habitat for wildlife.

It's an orchid heaven: Dendrobium hymenophyllum, Vanda limbata, Spathoglottis plicata, Pholidota imbricata, and the rarest protected pitcher orchid (Paphiopedilum schoseri) that looks like a small bag. For fauna, it's home to Flores endemic birds: Flores Scops Owl (Otus alfredi), Flores Monarch (Monarcha sacerdotum), and Russet-capped Tesia (Pachycephala nudigula). Also civets, cuscus, fruit bats, freshwater fish, and endemic frogs. One of the best birdwatching spots in East Nusa Tenggara!

Unlike crowded tourist lakes, Ranamese is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest with misty mornings - breathtaking serenity like Loch Ness. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking tranquility away from Labuan Bajo crowds.

Managed by BKSDA NTT and Golo Loni Tourism Village with local guides. Conservation programs include forest rehabilitation, endemic species monitoring, waste management, strict rules (no littering, no vegetation damage, visitor limits). A real example of sustainable ecotourism where economy and ecology go together.

4. Adventure Activities
Trekking around the lake, waterfall panorama, birdwatching, fishing, selfie spots, and enjoying the cool mountain air. You can combine with Poco Likang seasonal lake for a "Two Lakes of Ruteng" tour.

How to Get There:

From Ruteng: Only 16km via Trans-Flores Road towards Bajawa. About 40-60 minutes by motorbike or car. The road is paved and in good condition.

From Labuan Bajo: About 2.5-3 hours drive to Ruteng, then continue to Ranamese. Many tours include it as first stop from Labuan Bajo to Bajawa.

Entrance: Small entrance fee at TWA Ruteng post. Local guide from Golo Loni village is recommended and available at the gate. Toilet and photo spot facilities available.

Best Time: Early morning (6-9 AM) for misty lake photos, birdwatching, and cool temperature. Bring jacket - it gets cold!

Pro Tip: Combine in one day: Ranamese Lake (permanent volcanic lake) + Danau Poco Likang (seasonal catchment lake, 40 min from Ruteng, knee-deep, with 10°C frost phenomenon) + Poco Likang peak (2,109m) sunrise!
