Overview

Lewokluok is one of 7 villages in Demon Pagong District, East Flores Regency, and it is the capital of the district. The people of Lewokluok belong to the Lamaholot ethnic group, mostly traditional farmers who still practice farming methods passed down through generations.

Lewokluok is officially listed as a Cultural Tourism Village in East Flores Regency, with Culture and Tradition as its main attraction. It won the Anugerah Pesona Indonesia Awards 2021 in the Most Popular Traditional Village category. The signature annual event that draws many visitors is the Koke Bale Ceremony - a form of thanksgiving for the blessings received throughout the year in the form of harvest.

Why Lewokluok is Special

1. The Sacred Korke & Koke Bale Houses - Identity of Demon Pagong

This is not a museum village. This is a living, sacred center.

At the heart of the settlement stands the sacred stilt house called Korke - a roofless stage house supported by pillars, located in the middle of the tribal settlement. This is no ordinary house. It is considered sacred by the indigenous community and is the identity of the tribes in Demon Pagong. It is where the heads of all tribes gather.

Architecture with deep meaning: The Korke traditional house has 6 main pillars called ri'e representing the 6 mother tribes of the Demon Pagong customary alliance, and 18 supporting pillars called baledan representing each tribe in the alliance. The building has a four-sided roof and is deeply spiritual. The people believe in the sky god and earth god who protect them, called Rera Wula Tana Ekan.

Next to it is the famous Koke Bale house - the symbol of the village and the stage for the annual ceremony.

2. The Koke Bale Ceremony - A True Thanksgiving Festival

Once a year, the village comes alive with the Koke Bale traditional ceremony. This is not a show for tourists - it is the community's authentic expression of gratitude for a year of harvest and blessings. You will witness ancient chants, traditional dances, ritual offerings, and the entire community gathered in their finest handwoven ikat.

• Location: Desa Lewokluok, Kecamatan Demon Pagong, Flores Timur - 25 km from Larantuka City.

• How to Get There: You can use a private vehicle from Larantuka (about 45-60 minutes) or join a tour that provides an experienced guide. The road is the scenic north coast road.

• Best Time: During the Koke Bale annual harvest ceremony (usually after harvest season). Contact the local tourism office for exact dates.

• What to Do: Follow the entry ritual, visit the sacred Korke house, learn about the tribal alliance system, taste local food, see traditional ikat weaving, and enjoy the exotic coastal scenery of the north coast.

• Tip: This village is as culturally significant as Wae Rebo in Manggarai, but in East Flores. If Wae Rebo is in Manggarai, Lewokluok is in Demon Pagong. Show respect, dress modestly, and ask before taking photos of sacred rituals.
